美西战争爆发后，美国需要尽快联系到西班牙反抗军首领加西亚将军，而后者藏身在古巴山区的密林。总统听说有个名叫罗文的人，只有他能找到加西亚。于是他们把罗文找来，交给他一封写给加西亚的信。关于罗文如何拿了信，把它装进一个油布制的袋里封好吊在胸口，划着一艘小船，四天之后的夜里在古巴上岸，消逝于丛林中，接着在三个星期后从古巴岛的那一边出来，如何徒步走过一个危机四伏的国家，把那封信交给了加西亚等等这些细节都不是重点，重点是麦金利总统把一封致加西亚的信交给了罗文，而罗文接过信之后，并没有问：“他在什么地方？”
以上并非摘要，故事就这么长。1899年阿尔伯特哈伯德在自家杂志上发表，随后连载系列文章。一个世纪以来，以《把信送给加西亚》为主要内容的书被翻译成各种文字，由各国政府军队和企业将此书赠送给士兵和职员，作为培养敬业守则的读本，号称世界第六畅销书。
2002年一个三岁就很胖的家伙买了堆廉价书送朋友，现在回想起来，《把信送给加西亚》所提倡的敬业、服从、勤奋，给刚或将工作的小青年无疑是及时的。但看过整本书没提送信过程更多细节，只是左右反复一味地赞赏罗文中尉“什么也不问就去送信”的德行，就让人恼火了。
看我们身边，有多少人终日像罗文一声不吭却疲于奔命？
又有谁凭沉默出了人头地？在这个做秀的时代。
罗文无疑是成功的，对他的成功之道，我做如下理解：
1.罗文没有问“加西亚在什么地方”不代表他不找向导，不查地图，不带纸笔和信号弹。相反，罗文是古巴通，知道找加西亚应该问谁去哪找怎么去，而总统知道这事可以交给罗文，双方都应用了信息时代的生存技能：“我不知道答案，但我知道问谁”。
“信息爆炸”这词在世纪末流行一时，早已经淡出报端，看来老百姓适应爆炸挺快的。到今天这个后爆炸时代已经没什么非记住不可的网址，但你至少得会上goobai，接下来就全靠专业知识去确定答案。假如对古巴一窍不通，罗文的反应也只能是“谁？哪？”，不知道还不问，那叫缺心眼。

罗文深知自己要直面一切困难，更要让老板放心。不问，体现他专业的自信，是让老板放心的办法之一，不问，但一定有“yes sir no problem sir”。接下来执行过程中的反馈更重要，百多年前资讯落后，罗文可以消失几周穿越丛林，换成今天48小时没消息就得派人救他。更别说一旦信送到，如何及时报知总统，如何送回信，那又是另一个故事。
麦金利总统也是成功的，值得企业领导人学习：
3.知人善任是真正的钥匙。总统之所以成为总统，罗文永远是他的兵，在众多赤胆忠心中，只有罗文能解决“找到加西亚”的问题，而总统知道这一点。身为老板经常头疼的就是员工一大把，遇事无人可用。没有专业人士辅佐，老板就是一可怜虫，空喊“没有条件创造条件”和“别提过程我只要结果”除了扮酷有屁用？
4.疑人不用用人不疑。中小企业的号召力凝聚力不能跟联邦政府似的，送信的任务倒是都差不多。一件零碎差使会影响员工前程，而老板的人心得失，往往也是因为小事儿。要达到双方信任，培养良好的职业素质是前提，从这个角度说，教会员工沟通，而不是沉默，非常重要。有了前提，还要有一套可操作的办法来确保信息的真实准确及时。美国总统是怎样发现和了解罗文，又凭什么相信罗文所开辟的线索，敢以将士的生命交托其上？
